How this estimate works
The calculator starts from the national median annual premium for full coverage, $2,361, published in NerdWallet's October 2026 car insurance rate analysis. The analysis uses rates from Quadrant Information Services for a 35-year-old driver with good credit, a clean record and a 2023 Toyota Camry LE, with 100/300/50 liability limits, uninsured motorist coverage, and collision and comprehensive coverage with $1,000 deductibles.
Each answer applies a multiplier from the same analysis: your state's median divided by the national median, your age band, your driving record and your credit tier. Choosing state-minimum coverage applies the national ratio between minimum and full coverage. Insurer rows show the same estimate scaled by each company's published national median, so they show relative price levels, not quotes.
What is included
- All 50 states and the District of Columbia
- Drivers aged 20 to 70 on their own policy (published teen rates are for teens added to a parent's policy, so they are not used here)
- Speeding ticket, at-fault accident and DUI surcharges
- Good or poor credit. California, Hawaii and Massachusetts do not allow credit-based pricing, so choose good credit there
Limitations
The factors are multiplied independently, so combinations, such as a young driver with a DUI in a high-cost state, are approximations. Your vehicle, ZIP code, annual mileage, discounts and each insurer's underwriting can change the real price a lot. Medians are not averages, and rates change over time.
This is an indicative estimate, not an offer of insurance. Policies are issued by licensed insurers and placed through licensed producers in your state. To compare real prices, request a quote or read about auto insurance coverage.
