How this estimate works

Commercial auto insurance covers liability and physical damage for vehicles your business owns or uses. Insureon reports a median premium of $245 a month per policy for its small business customers, with annual premiums from under $375 to over $16,000. Insureon's figures are medians of policies its small business customers bought from leading insurers; most of those customers have fewer than five employees, revenue from under $50,000 to over $200,000 and five years or less in business.

The calculator multiplies the annual median by your industry's median relative to $245 and, for the ten states Insureon lists, by the state ratio. Industry figures come from Insureon's commercial auto page where it names the industry and otherwise from its industry cost pages; trucking businesses have a median of $816 a month.

What is included

  • Liability for injuries and property damage your business vehicles cause, which almost every state requires for business-owned vehicles
  • Optional collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage

Limitations

The medians are per policy, and no published per-vehicle figure was available, so the number of vehicles is not a separate input. Vehicle type and value, radius of operation, driver records, cargo and limits drive the real price; heavy trucks and trailers cost far more than cars and vans. Personal auto policies usually exclude business use, and employees' own cars may need hired and non-owned auto coverage.
