How this estimate works

Commercial general liability insurance covers claims that your business caused bodily injury or property damage to others, plus advertising injury. Insureon reports a median of $45 a month, or $538 a year, for small businesses, with annual premiums from about $265 to $3,030. Insureon's figures are medians of policies its small business customers bought from leading insurers; most of those customers have fewer than five employees, revenue from under $50,000 to over $200,000 and five years or less in business.

The calculator applies your industry's median relative to the overall median, the state ratio for the ten states Insureon publishes, and the published difference for higher limits: customers who choose $2 million / $4 million limits pay a median of $46 a month instead of $45.

What is included

  • Most customers (85%) choose $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate limits
  • Deductibles typically between $500 and $1,000
  • Industries with customer foot traffic or work on other people's property, such as construction and installation, pay the most

Limitations

Revenue, payroll, number of locations, claims history and the exact type of work drive real prices. Many contracts require additional insureds or per-project aggregate endorsements. General liability does not cover professional mistakes, employee injuries or business vehicles; those need professional liability, workers' compensation and commercial auto policies.
