How this estimate works
The base is NerdWallet's 2026 national median renters premium of $165 a year. The sample tenant is a nonsmoker with good credit in a two-bedroom apartment, with $30,000 of personal property coverage, $100,000 of liability coverage, $10,000 of additional living expenses and a $500 deductible. Rates are medians across insurers in every ZIP code.
Your answers apply ratios published in the same analysis: your state's median relative to the national median, personal property limits from $10,000 to $100,000, a higher liability limit, replacement cost coverage, a recent theft claim and poor credit. NerdWallet also found that raising the deductible from $500 to $1,000 saves less than a dollar a month, so the deductible is not a separate option.
What is included
- Personal property, liability, medical payments and loss of use, as in a typical renters policy
- All 50 states and the District of Columbia
- Insurer price levels for State Farm, Erie, Auto-Owners, Travelers and USAA (USAA serves the military community only)
Limitations
Your building, ZIP code, pets, valuables that need extra coverage and discounts such as bundling with auto insurance can change the price. Factors are multiplied independently, so the result is an approximation. Credit-based pricing is not allowed in California, Maryland and Massachusetts.
This is an indicative estimate, not an offer of insurance. Policies are issued by licensed insurers and placed through licensed producers in your state. Read more about renters insurance or request a quote.
