How this estimate works

Comprehensive travel insurance is priced mainly on how much of your trip you insure and how old you are. Squaremouth's 2026 data report, based on policies sold from October 1, 2025 to October 1, 2026, shows the average international comprehensive premium equal to about 4% of trip cost for travelers up to age 49, 5% for ages 50 to 59, 7% for 60 to 69, 9% for 70 to 79 and 12% for travelers 80 and older. The calculator multiplies your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost per traveler by that percentage and by the number of travelers.

If you add Cancel For Any Reason coverage, the estimate is raised by 53%, the average increase Squaremouth reports. CFAR typically reimburses only part of your trip cost, often up to 75%.

What is included

  • Trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical and evacuation, delay and baggage benefits found in comprehensive plans
  • As a cross-check, NerdWallet's 2024 analysis found an average of 6.87% of trip cost, and the U.S. Travel Insurance Association cites 4% to 8%

Limitations

Trip length, destination, state of residence and plan design change the price, and medical-only plans cost much less because they do not insure the trip cost. Percentages by age reflect average purchases, not a rate table of any insurer. Check what your credit card or health plan already covers before you buy.

This is an indicative estimate, not an offer of insurance. Policies are issued by licensed insurers and placed through licensed producers. Read more about travel insurance or request a quote.
