How this estimate works

A personal umbrella policy adds liability coverage above your auto and home policies. The calculator uses typical annual premiums reported by InsuredBetter, a network of independent agents, from an ACE Private Risk Services report: $383 for $1 million of coverage, $474 for $2 million, $608 for $5 million and $999 for $10 million, for a household with one home, two cars and two drivers. NerdWallet, citing the same platform in 2026, puts the average at about $380 for $1 million to $2 million of coverage.

The same report shows $1,578 for $10 million when the household also has two more homes, two more cars, a boat and a driver under 25. The calculator applies that ratio to other limits as an approximation. Because each additional million of coverage costs less than the first, higher limits are usually an efficient way to protect savings, home equity and future income.

What affects the price

  • The limit you choose; each extra million costs less than the first
  • Number of homes, vehicles, watercraft and drivers, especially young drivers
  • Pools, trampolines, dogs and other liability exposures
  • Driving records and claims history, and the state you live in

Limitations

Most insurers require minimum liability limits on your underlying auto and home policies, which can raise their cost, and many sell umbrella coverage only with those policies. The reference figures come from a single report and are not state specific.

This is an indicative estimate, not an offer of insurance. Policies are issued by licensed insurers and placed through licensed producers in your state. Read more about umbrella insurance or request a quote.
