AXA traces its origins to Ancienne Mutuelle de Rouen, a Normandy mutual created in the early 19th century; the AXA name was created in 1985. The group headquarters are at 25 avenue Matignon in Paris.

AXA provides health, life and savings, and property and casualty insurance for individuals and businesses. AXA Partners delivers assistance and specialty cover, and AXA XL is the group's P&C and specialty risk division for complex commercial, professional, financial lines and reinsurance business.

United States

AXA acquired a majority interest in the US life insurer Equitable in 1991 and later took Equitable public; in 2018 the acquisition of XL Group made AXA, by its own account, the world's largest commercial P&C insurer.
