About the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) is a national association of independent, community-based and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. It was formed in 1982; Blue Cross itself dates to 1929. The Association owns and manages the BCBS trademarks and licenses them to independent companies in exclusive geographic areas. Its headquarters is in Chicago, with an office in Washington, D.C.
The BCBS system
BCBS companies provide coverage for 118 million members in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and more than 2 million doctors and hospitals contract with them. The Association includes 33 BCBS companies. The BCBS Federal Employee Program covers U.S. federal employees, retirees and their families.
How to get service
BCBSA itself does not sell policies. Coverage, claims and customer service are handled by your local BCBS company: call the toll-free number on the back of your member ID card. Learn more in our health insurance guide or request a quote.
