About Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente was founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield and is headquartered in Oakland, California. It describes itself as one of the nation's largest not-for-profit health plans, serving 12.9 million members. It combines Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and the Permanente Medical Groups.

How it works

Unlike most insurers, Kaiser Permanente both covers and delivers care: members generally use Kaiser Permanente doctors, hospitals and medical offices. It operates in California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, the Mid-Atlantic States (Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C.), Nevada, Oregon and southwest Washington, and Washington.
