MAPFRE was founded on May 16, 1933, as a small Spanish mutual. Its head office is at Carretera de Pozuelo-Majadahonda 52, Majadahonda. The company describes itself as the largest Spanish insurer worldwide and the leading multinational insurance group in Latin America, present in 37 countries.

MAPFRE sells motor, home, life, health and other personal lines; MAPFRE Global Risks covers large risks in aviation, energy, industry and construction; MAPFRE Re provides reinsurance; and MAWDY provides assistance services.
United States
MAPFRE has operated in the US since the 1990s, started reinsurance there in 2000, bought the Commerce Group in 2008 and renamed the business MAPFRE Insurance in 2015, with headquarters in Massachusetts.
