About Nodak Insurance
Nodak Insurance Company was formed in 1946 to provide property and casualty coverage to members of the North Dakota Farm Bureau. NI Holdings calls it the largest domestic property and casualty insurer based in North Dakota. You must be a North Dakota Farm Bureau member to hold a policy. Nodak Mutual Insurance Company converted to stock form in March 2017. Nodak Insurance is now a wholly owned subsidiary of NI Holdings, Inc., which is listed on Nasdaq as NODK and is majority owned by Nodak Mutual Group, Inc.
Products
In North Dakota, Nodak writes private passenger auto, homeowners, farmowners, commercial multi-peril, excess liability and dwelling coverage. It also writes crop hail and federal multi-peril crop insurance (see agriculture insurance).
Group and distribution
Coverage is sold through captive agents. Nodak leads a reinsurance pool with affiliates American West, Battle Creek, Primero and Direct Auto. NI Holdings sold Westminster American in June 2024. It stopped writing new non-standard auto business at Direct Auto in Illinois and at Primero in Arizona and South Dakota during 2025.
