About Royal Neighbors of America
Royal Neighbors of America traces its roots to 1888, when Marie Kirkland of Council Bluffs, Iowa, invited the wives of Modern Woodmen of America members to meet. The group was chartered as a fraternal benefit society in Illinois on March 21, 1895. Its home office moved from Peoria to Rock Island, Illinois, in 1908. The society was active in the women's suffrage movement in the early 20th century.
What a fraternal benefit society is
As a fraternal, Royal Neighbors is owned by its members rather than by shareholders. Members buy insurance and also gain access to member benefits and community programs that the society funds.
