About Rural Mutual Insurance
Rural Mutual Insurance Company was formed in Madison in 1934 by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation to provide low-cost auto insurance to Farm Bureau members. It took its current name in 1957, when Rural Mutual Casualty Insurance Company merged with Rural Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Wisconsin. In January 2025 it completed an affiliation with Badger Mutual Insurance.

Financial strength
The company has received an A+ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best for the ninth year in a row. In February 2025 AM Best assigned a group rating of A+ with a negative outlook to Rural Mutual and Badger Mutual.
