Safety Insurance Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: SAFT) is headquartered at 20 Custom House Street in Boston. Through its predecessors it has underwritten insurance in Massachusetts since 1979; it began writing in New Hampshire in 2008 and Maine in 2016. Policies are issued by Safety Insurance Company, Safety Indemnity Insurance Company, Safety Property and Casualty Insurance Company and Safety Northeast Insurance Company.
On July 23, 2026, Safety agreed to be acquired by MAPFRE U.S.A. Corp., the US arm of Spain's MAPFRE, and would become its wholly owned subsidiary. As of September 2026 the deal was still subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Market position and distribution
Safety is the fourth-largest private passenger auto carrier and the largest commercial auto carrier in Massachusetts, and the third-largest homeowners carrier there. It sells only through independent agents, who numbered 797 in 1,063 locations in 2025.

AM Best rates the company A (Excellent); the rating was reaffirmed on June 20, 2025.
