Compañía Suramericana de Seguros was created on December 12, 1944 in Medellín by representatives of 36 companies and 150 individuals. Today Suramericana S.A. is the insurance and risk-management company of Grupo SURA and operates under the SURA brand in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay. Its shares are not traded on a stock exchange.
