Trupanion was founded in Canada in 2000 as Vetinsurance Ltd. and began doing business as Trupanion in 2007. Today Trupanion, Inc. is headquartered in Seattle and trades on Nasdaq. In the United States its primary insurance subsidiary and underwriter, American Pet Insurance Company, is licensed in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Products

Trupanion offers medical insurance for cats and dogs priced on each pet's characteristics and chosen coverage level. Its software installed at participating veterinary hospitals allows direct payment to the veterinarian. It also provides pet insurance marketed by third parties and sells lower-priced products in Canada under the Furkin and PHI Direct brands. Trupanion either directly underwrites or assumes the full insurance risk for its subscription products; in Canada it underwrites through its subsidiary GPIC Insurance Company.
