MetLife, Inc. is the holding company for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, based at 200 Park Avenue in New York. The company traces its roots to 1863 and opened as Metropolitan Life Insurance Company on March 24, 1868. It became a public company in 2000 and trades on the NYSE under the symbol MET. Outside the U.S., MetLife operates in Japan, Latin America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In the U.S., MetLife is best known for coverage offered through employers: group life, disability, dental and other voluntary benefits, plus retirement and income solutions for plan sponsors.
